From Florida to Alaska, thousands turned out to celebrate and honor children during the inaugural National KidsDay in 2001. Big cities and small towns, alike, hosted events and sent a powerful message: adults who spend meaningful time with kids fulfill one of the most basic needs in a child's healthy development.
Opening of the First National Kids Day Festival in Washington, D.C. on Sunday, August 5, 2001. The National Kids Day is the first Sunday of August, and the D.C. festival was one of hundreds across the nation. Chapters of organizations such as Boys and Girls Clubs of America, the YMCA and the American Red Cross sponsored the local festival.
